Welcome To The Bottom

Accepting an invitation to take part in one of the Gameday Ritual Champions' Leagues is a risky proposition. It's an honor, to be sure, since only people who managed to win their private or public league last year are invited. But in Champions Leagues, GMs whose teams fail to finish at .500 or better are dropped to make room for the new crop of honorees. Yes, that means as a new guy you are guaranteed to find yourself a the helm of a loser.

Of course, there are a lot of different reasons your new team might have done poorly last year. Bad contracts, injuries, GM indifference. You name it. So it's not necessarily a lost cause to join in the fun. But seeing your new team sitting down at the bottom of last year's standings is sobering, to say the least. Especially since just to be here you had to have a team make it to the top.

In the end, taking part as a new GM in one of the Champions Leagues amounts to being told "Here, take the Royals and make them a winner. You have one season to do it. Fail, and you're fired. Win, and you can come back next year. Just try not to lose then, or we'll have to have Guido take you out back and kneecap you."

Sound like fun? It does to me. That's why I'm here.

On Deck: Assessing my new team
